CORNING — The Corning Hawks swimming and diving team gets ready to kick the season off with a balanced grout of experienced swimmers and newcomers.

“We have a really strong junior and sophomore classes, and we are excited about some incoming freshmen,” Corning coach Anthony Furstoss said. “We have a lot of kids we are excited to watch this year and we are looking forward to that. As they have been growing in the sport and growing as leaders on the team, it’s been fun to watch too.”

The team also has a number of newcomers they are looking for big things from.

“We have a big surge of freshmen coming in and we are excited to see how they take on things and how they progress,” Furstoss said.

Those younger kids are also going to help the older kids step up into bigger roles this year.

“I think it helps them mature a little bit,” Furstoss said. “They aren’t the young kids anymore, they have to step up into those leadership roles so I think tha’ts good growth for them. We are hoping the younger kids can get up to speed quickly.”

The team has a lot of big goals this year.

“We have our eyes on some of those state cuts and hopefully there are sectional wins at the end of the season and so those are goals and the kids are going to work toward it,” Furstoss said. “I think they have a lot of potential, a lot of them put in the work in the work in the offseason, so we’ll see how things go and fingers crossed everyone is happy at the end.”
