CORNING — With the biggest numbers in a long time the Corning Hawks are getting to work as they began practices last week.

“It’s very exciting,” Corning coach Brian Guilfoyle said. “Every year kind of sneaks up on you. But, then you get in here and it’s like you never left and you pick it back up.”

The team has big nubers going into the year.

“We have a lot of kids, biggest numbers I have had since I’ve been here,” Guilfoyle said. “We have a lot of young talent coming up, we have eager kids and big numbers.

“We are close to having 50 kids between our JV and varsity program, so that’s a number I haven’t dealt with in my years here, so I’m really excited.

Those numbers show where the program is right now.

“The numbers are a good sign of a program that is doing it right all the way through,” Guilfoyle said. “It started with that youth program, that’s big, it gets filled up in the first couple of days. They have 60 kids, modified is full, that indicates the health of the program. JV’s numbers, varsity, we are at never before seen numbers and it’s definitely a good thing.”

The team has been getting ready for the season since the school year began.

“Excitement level is good,” Guilfoyle said. “We have been having open at since the second week of school and even then we were getting 30 kids a session. Then, we had our fall athletes (when practices started last week) and they were able to get in here and switch gears a little bit and you can tell they were hungry for the at. Everyone’s spirits are high and excited to get going.”
