CORNING — The Corning Hawks girls’ wrestling team hit the at last week to begin practices for the new season.

“It’s great,” coach Matt Kline said. “We have a couple of girls this year. We have a couple out because of physical stuff, but we are starting off really well. We have a lot of young kids this year, but a lot of positive attitudes. These kids, I think they are liking it, they are getting better and better every day.”

And, the numbers are solid for Corning this year.

“We have in total 11,” Kline said. “By the first tournament, hopefully we have all 11 with us. Hoping to have everybody going by Dec. 6 at Horseheads when we have the first tournament.”

The team is already building bonds as they start the season.

“First practice was great,” Kline said. “A lot of these kids are already starting to become friends. That’s really good. It’s really hard when you are trying wrestling, especially for the first time and you don’t really have any friends yet. Once you become buddies with your partners it’s a lot easier to show up and these people already put in the work in the offseason, they they have already started to become buddies, which is great.”
