SOUTHPORT — A year ago the Notre Dame boys’ basketball won their first IAC division title since 2013, and came a basket away from an IAC overall title.

Now, the Crusaders are back to work, preparing for a new season.

“It’s exciting,” Notre Dame coach Nick Weirmiller said. “We have a really good group coming back. Some guys that were a key part of last year’s run. It’s an exciting time of year.”

The Crusaders have a number of key players back this year who were part of last year’s run.

“We have some guys that have a lot of experience with Finn Schweizer, Rocco Sayers, Skoon Jenkins, Max O’Connor, Landon English. Those guys have been there before, played in tough environments and won some games and that definitely gives us some confidence.”

Notre Dame has some key upperclassmen leading the way this year.

“Finn Schweizer, this is his fourth year playing here for me,” Weirmiller said. “Kind of hard to believe how fast time is going here, but he’s kind of the heart and soul of our team, obviously a captain. Having those seniors really makes an impact on those younger guys to give them confidence.”

While the team had success last year, they are hoping for even ore this season.

“Our goal is always to win a sectional championship,” Weirmiller said. “We fell short of that the past couple of years, and that’s definitely our goal this year to kind of get past the hump and hopefully achieve that.”
