ELMIRA — The Elmira Express wrestling team hit the mats on Monday for the first day of winter sports practices.

With strong numbers, the Express are ready for the new season.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Elmira coach David Guyette said. “It’s always exciting the first couple of days. It will be nice when we get everybody back, but right now we’ve got decent numbers and kids are coming in ready to work.”

With football playing in a regional final this weekend the Express are a little shorthanded to start practices.

“I think we have about 9-10 kids who are still playing football,” Guyette said. “It will be nice to get them back, but I want them to play football as long as they can and then we’ll catch the up when they come back.”

The success the players are having in football is something that can carry over into wrestling.

“It definitely gives them a little momentum,” Guyette said. “And, when they are done with football they are ready for a change and go into wrestling.”

When everyone returns the numbers will be strong for Elmira.

“We are right now I think we have about 50 signed up,” Guyette said. “Pretty good numbers. Hopefully we end up right around 40ish when all is said and done.”
