ELMIRA — Area swimmers hit the pool for the Section IV, Class A prelims on Wednesday night at the pool at Ernie Davis Academy.
Horseheads’ Karina Lapierre became the first state qualifier of the year for area schools, hitting the cut time in the 50 free with a 24.82.
“I’m very happy I have qualified, I have tried for four years now and I finally made it,” Lapierre said.
Lapierre has been to states before in relays, but now she’s going to states for the first time in an individual event.
“I knew I could do it, but I didn’t know when I could do it,” Lapierre said. “I felt pretty good, my turn down there was really good. I knew it as soon as I heard people screaming. To make an individual (event) is pretty special.”
