STAC BOYS' SOCCER: LAST SECOND GOAL BY SARGENT LIFTS CORNING PAST ELMIRA (24 PHOTOS) (2025-09-16)

Southern Tier Sports Report
CORNING — Cooper Sargent scored with :04 left on the clock as the Corning boys’ soccer team edged Elmira 2-1 on Tuesday night.

“Today was a great matchup between the two teams that have won the last five Section IV Big School Championships,” Corning coach Chad Freelove said. “It was a battle of wills, where Elmira exerted its influence on the set pieces and we were able to possess the ball a bit through the midfield.

“Each team had their chances and it literally came down to the last second. A beautifully slotted pass from Landyn Proudfoot to Carter Sargent with :04 left on the clock for the in tight finish. Couldn’t be more proud of our back four defenders (Kohler Brass, Will Howles, Matt McKendrick and John Tully) and our goalkeeper (Logan Durand).”

Elmira started the scoring midway through the first half on a Brody Hamilton goal. With 10 minutes left in the half James Goodman tied things for Corning.

Corning had six shots and two corners and Elmira had six shots and eight corner kicks.

Durand had five saves and Sean Hanrahan had four saves for Elmira.
