Southern Tier Sports ReportCORNING — The host Corning Hawks won the silver bracket at the Corning Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, while Horseheads raced the gold semifinals and Edison reached the gold quarters.
Corning won 25-22, 25-18 over SVE in the silver final. They made the final with a 25-8, 25-23 win over SOTA in the semifinals. In the first set of the semifinals it was 9-7 Corning when Sam Molingou went to the service line and racked up 15 straight points.
Char Starns had seven solo blocks, 17 kills and 13 points and Evie Starns had 14 kills and three blocks.
Sam Molingou had six blocks, 22 kills and 15 points and Melina Schwesinger finished with six points and 13 kills and Paisley Emmick had 40 assists and 14 points.
In pool play Corning went 3-3 topping Tioga 25-22, 25-18, falling to North-Penn Liberty 25-23, 25-23 and splitting with Lyons 25-23, 25-8.
The Hawks were third in the pool, matching NPL with a 3-3 mark, but NPL getting into the gold bracket based on head-to-head, while Corning went to the silver bracket.
Horseheads went 6-0 in pool play, topping Edison 25-12, 25-14, SVE 25-23, 25-19 and Newark Valley 25-13, 25-8. They had the best overall mark in pool play to get the bye to the gold semifinals.
Horseheads fell in the semifinals to Ithaca 17-25, 25-22, 8-15.
Alexxa Fairchild-Johnson had 13 kills, nine digs and an ace and Kailey McCormick had 25 kills, 14 digs, an ace and two blocks.
Jenna Randall had six kills, seven aces, seven digs and two blocks and Emelia Clark had a block and two kills.
Madden Foster had 14 digs and Kolby Chaffee had five kills, three aces, two blocks and two digs.
Kaitlyn Procopio had three kills and two digs and Ashley Yenger had 55 assists, six digs and two aces, while Braelyn Brozovic had five digs, two kills and an ace, while Ava Nicholas had a kill.
Edison was second in the same bracket, falling to Horseheads 25-12, 25-14, splitting with SVE 25-23, 19-25 and beating Newark Valley 25-19, 25-22. Edison was 3-3 while SVE was 2-4 and Newark Valley was 1-5 in the pool.
Edison fell to Lansing in the gold bracket.
