PLEASANT VALLEY — Corning’s Delaney Abel tied for first place at the NYS Federations Golf Tournaament on Sunday at James Baird State Park Golf Course.

Abel, who finished third at the girls’ state championships on Monday, tied with Jocelyn Wintersteen after Wintersteen hit a 50-foot putt on 18 to tie Abel. Wintersteen took first place based on the birdie on the final hole.

“All season long she has been great,” Corning coach Chris Clark said of Abel. “Being a ninth grader and some of the stuff she accomplished this year is amazing. It’s awesome to see, it’s awesome to be around, she works very hard. Going down here today on the whim for an 18-hole one-day tournament, just going down and playing great was good to see for her.

“She puts in the effort all the time. All the hard work the next three years is going to be some amazing accomplishments for her.”

And, Abel is helping to make the Corning golf program even better with her success.

“As a team standpoint it’s awesome,” Clark said. “We have girls who are friends with her who played other sports and they have gravitated toward golf because of her. They played lacrosse, or softball, but because of Delaney and what she’s done they are coming to the golf program because they want to be a part of it. This year we had 13 girls on the roster and a lot of that is because they want to be a part of it and be Delaney’s teammate.”
