STAC SOFTBALL: JOHNSTON THROWS 2-HITTER, CURRERI HOMERS AS CORNING TOPS ELMIRA (24 PHOTOS) (2025-05-14)

CORNING — The Corning Hawks got a two-hitter on the mound from Mattisen Johnston and Kendall Curreri hit a home run as they beat Elmira 3-0.

Corning scored two runs in the first inning and Curreri had the third-inning home run for the runs in the game.

Curreri had the home run and scored twice. Kayleigh Sparks and Keana Mann had hits and Johnston scored a run.

The first two runs came when Johnston walked and Curreri bunted and reached on an error. Curreri stole second and Johnston scored on an error on the play which eventually allowed Curreri to score as well.

Johnston struck out nine on the mound for Corning.

Marley Devlin and Ava Cornacchio combined on a three-hitter for Elmira. Devlin struck out five in three innings, allowing two hits and three runs, one earned, and Cornacchio allowed one hit in three innings.

Addison Taft and Devlin had the Elmira hits.

Corning, is 7-0 in the STAC West and 12-2 overall and they are at Horseheads at 5 p.m. today. Horseheads is 6-1 in the STAC West and 11-3 overall.

Corning is ranked 7th in Class AAA and Horseheads is eighth in AA. Corning won the first meeting 17-5.

With a Corning win they advance to the STAC semifinals at Green Light Grand Slam Park on Saturday with a time to be determined. If Horseheads win they force a tiebreaker to be played Friday to decide who advances to the STAC semifinals.
