CORNING — The defending state champion Corning Hawks picked up a mercy-rule win over Horseheads 17-5 in six innings, in a battle of state-ranked teams.
Corning, ranked third in the state in Class AAA, is 6-1. Horseheads, ranked seventh in AA, is 4-3 on the year.
Corning had six runs in the second and four in the third to take a 10-0 lead.
Horseheads got three in the fourth and two in the fifth to get within 10-5, but Corning scored seven in the sixth to get the win.
Daphne Sherman had a home run, two RBI and a run scored and Matti Johnston was 3-for-4 with a pair of triples, two RBI and three runs scored for Corning.
Kendall Curreri was 3-for-3 with three doubles, two RBI and three runs scored.
Lauren Teribury had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored and Kayleigh Sparks had a pair of hits, three runs scored and an RBI.
Lauren DeRosa, Sophie Schoonover and Emelia Smith had hits for Corning. DeRosa had two runs scored and an RBI, Schoonover had an RBI and a run scored and Smith scored two runs. Kaela Mann had an RBI.
Johnston went the distance on the mound, striking out seven.
Grace Cronin had two hits, with a double and two RBI for Horseheads and Caitlin Yearick, Megan Wolf, Chloe Perritt, Aubrey Howe and Samantha Bonnell all had hits for the Blue Raiders.
Yearick, Wolf, Perritt, Howe and Bonnell all scored runs in the game and Perritt and Reagan Burge had RBI.
Wolf worked three innings, striking out three and Perritt went two innings, with one strikeout. Burge got two outs, striking out two.
