SYRACUSE — The Elmira boys’ bowling team took second in the state at the NYSPHSAA Championships at Spares N Strikes Lanes on Friday afternoon.

“Like I told the boys, we shot over 1,000 each game, three of them were over 1,100, we had 1,182. Talk about consistency,” Elmira coach Jimmy McCauley said. “Arlington they have a good team as well. To come in second place by 107 pins, we can tear this apart and look at this and look at that, but at the end of the year, you are coming in second place in New York State, I don’t think we have anything to be ashamed about.”

Elmira’s boys sat fifth after three games, but closed strong, with the highest combination between the fourth and fifth games of any teams.

Elmira shot 1,112, 1,044 and 1,090 for a 3,246 through three games. They shot 1,111, 1,189 and 1,098 for a 3,398 for a six-game total of 6,644.

Arlington won with a 6,751 total. They shot 1,090, 1,127 and 1,092 for a 3,309 and 1,082, 1,143 and 1,143 for a 3,442 in the next three games.

“It’s always a team effort, it was great, we bowled with six guys, but Logan Card threw a 290 game,” McCauley said. “We had a 715 with Logan, a 705 with Belloma. 676 with Skylar, Frankie came in threw a 240 game, Payton Rozell stepped up big for us 221, and Gable has been consistent, big time threw a 1,312 final series. I am super proud of these guys. You go to the end, there are no more practices, there are no more games and we had a chance to win it, nothing to be ashamed of. What a great place to start for next year. We bring back all but two guys, and I’m pretty sure the other ones who will still be here will be pretty hungry.”

Trent Belloma led Elmira with a 206-205-242-200-246-259-1,358. He was sixth among all the boys. Logan Card shot 201-213-214-192-290-233-1,343. He was eighth. Skylar Shadduck was 10th at 246-215-196-243-245-188-1,333 and Alex Gablo was 15th at 269-185-235-202-215-206-1,312.

Frankie D’Angelo shot 190-226-203-245-193-196-1,253 to finish 23rd among the boys. Payton Rozell shot 177-151-169-221-161-204-1,083.

Card had the third highest game of the day with the 290. Michael Abendschein of Kenmore had a 300 game and Michael Saunders of East Syracuse Minoa had a 299 game.

Card was one of the sportsmanship winners on the day.
