ITHACA — Corning’s two relays will both return on Saturday for another swim at the NYSPHSAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
“It’s their first time up here,” Corning coach Anthony Furstoss said. “There are some adjustments. It’s an early meet. We are not even staying at a hotel, it’s so close. WE had to get on a bus early to get here and the kids were a little more tired than they are used to.”
In the 200 free relay Joey Crisco, JP Sierzant, Mark Hong and Marvin Reimsnyder were 21st in the prelims to return in the C final with a time of 1:30.16. They missed the B final by just one spot.
In the 200 medley relay Crisco, Sierzant, Shawn De Pedro and Reimsnyder were 23rd in the prelims to make the C final in 1:40.02.
Now that they’ve been to states the kids are excited to come back Saturday.
“They are very pumped (to come back Saturday),” Furstoss said. “It’s been a few years since our boys have been in the swimming aspect of it (stats) so it’s good to be back. I think they had a good, learning experience today so we are looking forward to doing better tomorrow and learning from today.
“It (states) can be a little overwhelming a little bit, that’s part of getting the first experience. The energy is good and we are looking forward to improving. I think they are focused on what they can do better.”
Crisco, who swam four events on the day, took 34th in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:00.71 and he was 43rd in the 200 IM in 2:02.02.
The state experience is something that can be helpful for the younger kids on the Corning roster.
“Joey is a freshman, we brought some of our underclassmen to who are the relays and hopefully we’ll be back next year and ready to go.
And, for the seniors on the team states is a nice way to end their careers.
“We have a really good group of seniors, so I was happy they were able to come up and experience this meet, be a part of it,” Furstoss said. “Passing the baton to the younger kids.”
