BINGHAMTON — The Corning boys’ basketball team beat the seventh ranked team in Class A in the state in the STAC semifinals, topping Seton Catholic 65-61 in the STAC semifinals on Wednesday.
“Great win on the road in a hostile environment,” Corning coach Mike Johnston Jr. said. “Really proud of our kids and how they competed tonight against a very well coached and extremely successful Seton basketball team and program.
“Carter Proudfoot, Kyler Stevenson and Jeremy Spears were difference makers tonight. Mekai Daniels made two clutch free throws down the stretch. Total team effort, outstanding defense over the course of the second half.”
Seton jumped out to a fast start, leading 21-14 after one quarter and 38-32 at the half. However, Corning outscored the Saints 18-9 in the third to go up 50-47 after three quarters on their way to the win.
Stevenson had 20 points, with nine boards, five assists and a steal and Carter Proudfoot tied his career high with 17 points, set last game, and two rebounds.
Nolyn Proudfoot had 13 points with six boards, an assist and a steal and Daniels had seven points, with two rebounds.
Spears had six points and three boards and Teigen Gill had two points.
Brian Dempsey had 19 points to lead Seton Catholic and Liam Kozel, Allan Eagles and Reece Goodman all had 11 points.
Corning will play Binghamton at 7:45 p.m on Friday at Union-Endicott for the STAC Championship.
