WAVERLY — Lily Gullo and Chloe Owen were both state qualifiers, while the Horseheads girls’ wrestling team took second at the Section IV Girls’ Wrestling Championships at Waverly High School on Saturday.
Horseheads was second at 109.5. Waverly won at 114.5.
“Horseheads girls wrestled hard and came up just a little short,” Horseheads coach Terri Monks said. “Wavelry is wrestling for a wrestling family member and in thier new gym. They did a great job.
“We were very pleased that Lily Gullo and Chloe Owen qualified to wrestle at the state meet.”
Gullo was runner-up at 107 to make states, while Owen was runner-up at 120 to make states.
Gullo had pins in 1:41 and 2:09 to get into the championship match.
Owen had a pin in 1:09 and a technical fall win 14-4 to get into the final.
Morgan Evans finished third at 145. She had a pin in 35 seconds over Brielle Wright of Deposit Hancock in the third-place match. Evans had a pin in 3:40. After falling in the semifinals, she had a pin in 43 seconds to get into the third-place match.
Brandilyn Beach finished fifth at 94 pounds.
Kirsten Davis was fifth at 185. She pinned Ava Northrup of Corning in 2:48 in the fifth-place match.
Ellisa Bly of Horseheads was third at 235. She pinned Coraline VanSkiver of Corning in 2:55 in the third-place match. Bly also had a pin in 1:46 over VanSkiver on the day and a pin in 59 seconds to get into the third-place match.
Alexis Miles went 1-2 at 114. She had a pin in 59 seconds on the day.
Lily Vesek went 2-2 at 132. She had a pin in 1:58 and a pin in 52 seconds on the day.
Jenna Haynes was 0-2 at 138. Narayani Wiehe was 1-2 at 152. She had a pin in 36 seconds on the day.
