There were a lot of great performances this week, leading to some tough choices for the athlete of the week honors. In the end, it was Corning’s Cella McLaughlin, while for the boys Corning’s Joey Crisco and Seamus Carroll of Horseheads who shared the weekly honors who are the Southern Tier Sports Report, sponsored by Drake HVAC Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning, Athletes of the Week.
SEAMUS CARROLL
Horseheads, boys’ wrestling
Made the finals at the Southern Tier Memorial in a loaded 285-pound weight class. Pinned his way into the finals at the event.
Had four pins in the tournament, all of them in the first two periods of the match.
JOEY CRISCO
Corning, boys’ swimming
Was named the swimmer of the meet at the Wolverine Invite. Qualified for his first state championships in the 100 breaststroke with a state-cut time of 59.91.
Also was the lead-off swimmer for a relay that hit a state qualifying time in the 200 free relay with a state time of 1:29.73. Helped the team win the team title at the Wolverine Invite.
CELLA MCLAUGHLIN
Corning, track and field
Won the 55 hurdles in a meet record time at the Jack Reed Invite. Set the meet record in both the prelims and then shattered it in the finals. Also won the long jump at the meet. Ran a 8.29 in the finals of the 55 hurdles, breaking the old meet record by .27. Had a long jump of 18-feet, 3 1/2-inches
