There were a lot of great performances this week, leading to some tough choices for the athlete of the week honors for the week dending Dec. 30. In the end, it was Horseheads’ Hunter Lavigne and Notre Dame’s Payton Sutryk who were named the Southern Tier Sports Report, sponsored by Drake HVAC Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning Athletes of the Week.
HUNTER LAVIGNE
Horseheads, Wrestling
Pinned his way to the 190-pound championship at the challenging Windsor Christmas Tournament.
Lavigne becomes the first Horseheads wrestler to win a title at Windsor since 2019. He also helped Horseheads take third as a team, just five points off the top score.
PAYTON SUTRYK
Notre Dame, girls’ basketball
Won the MVP for the regional division at the Josh Palmer Fund Clarion Classic over the weekend.
Sutryk had 28 points and seven rebounds as Notre Dame opened with a win over Seton Catholic.
Had 11 points, despite battling foul toruble, in the championship game.
