Southern Tier Sports Report
HORNELL — The Notre Dame girls’ soccer team opened the season with a 4-1 win over Bishop Kearney in a game at Hornell.
After a flurry of shots in the first half it was scoreless at the intermission, thanks to Payton Sutryk, who kept the Crusaders in the game mentally, stopping a penalty kick with just 2:20 left before the half.
Notre Dame got on its front foot in the second half with MK Young taking a free kick from 30-yards out to make it 1-0.
Several minutes later the second goal came from McKenna Keough off an assist by Emily Coseo as Coseo ended up one-on-one with the Kearney goalie.
With 23 minutes left MK Young got the Crusaders on the board again when she scored on a free kick from 28 yards out
With 12:35 left in the game Coseo took a corner and retrieved a bad touch by Kearns off the corner and played a perfect ball into Jhamairah Maxwell who placed the ball past the near post and their goalie to make it 4-0.
“Takeaway, we are very young,” Notre Dame coach Joe Picco said. “Team is playing a style that is too reactive for my liking. We will get back to work tomorrow and work on things that I haven’t been able to touch on due to a too short preseason.”
