Southern Tier Sports Report
SOUTHPORT — The Notre Dame girls’ soccer team will face some tough tests schedule wise this year as they got back to work last week to prepare for the upcoming season.
“With the schedule changes we are playing all large school,” Notre Dame coach Joe Picco said. “We are playing all B schools this year for the most part, which will be a challenge for this group, because it’s a very, very young group.
“It’s oging to be challenging, it really is. I looked back at the history of Notre Dame soccer for about 20 years and this might be the toughest schedule, from a school size, that they’ve ever played.”
For Picco it’s always fun to get back to the high school season.
“It’s been challenging to get back this year, just because of all the things going on, from a soccer standpoint,” Picco said. “It’s been a long offseason with BC United. But, it’s always nice to get back. I like the high school girls, I like the environment. It’s always exciting to see kids come back.”
Picco knows he has a good group of girls coming into the season.
“The one thing about this group, and there is a core group of them, and I think they are just excited to be together,” Picco said. “They are so supportive of each other. From top to bottom, I think that’s what high school soccer is really about, being in that environment From a soccer standpoint we might be starting three eighth graders, so that’s a huge, huge thing for us.”
