CORNING — The Corning Hawks rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game, but in the end they came up just short against unbeaten North Penn-Liberty 6-5 in a non-league matchup.
North Penn-Liberty struck first in the fourth inning as Haley Litzelman hit a one-out solo home run. With two outs NPL had two runners reach on errors before Marissa Griess followed with an RBI single. Nicole Kiscaden then hit a two-run double.
The game headed to the fifth inning with the Mountaineers up 4-0, before Corning got on the board. Sophia Polzella reached on an error and Matti Johnston singled on a bunt.
Peyton Sullivan then hit a two-run triple and Sullivan scored on a wild pitch.
With two outs Lauren DeRosa singled and then stole second and third and scored on a steal of home plate.
In the sixth inning Addie Smith singled for North Penn-Liberty and Peyton chapel singled and with one out Kiscadden hit a groundout that moved the runners, before Mackenzi Tice tripled home two runs.
Sullivan led off the seventh inning with a home run to cut the deficit to one, however Tice got the next three outs for NPL to end the game.
Sullivan was 3-for-4 with the triple and home run, three RBI and two runs scored and Johnston had two hits and scored a run.
Polzella had a triple and scored a run and DeRosa had a hit and scored a run.
Sullivan worked 3 2/3 innings and allowed five hits and four runs, one earned. She struck out four in the game. Johnston worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and two runs, striking out three.
Tice went the distance for NPL, striking ut 11 and allowing seven hits and five runs, three earned.
Tice and Smith each had two hits in the game, Tice a triple and Smith a double. Tice had two RBI and Smith two runs scored.
Kiscadden had two RBI with her hit and Litzelman had the home run, while McKenna Lightner had a double.
Megan Spohn, Chapel and Griess had hits in the game.
