Southern Tier Sports Report
ELMIRA — It was a record-setting day for freshman Mariah Matias in Elmira’s 52-43 loss to Union-Endicott on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the loss the Express freshman broke the school record for rebounds in a game with 25. The previous school record was 22, set by Megan Fedor in 2022.

The Express held a red out to support Waverly after the accident that claimed the life of Waverly girls' basketball player Peyton Shaw.

Matias had a double-double for the Express, scoring 11 points to go with the 25 boards.

Ellie Clearwater had 10 points for Elmira in the game and Caitlyn Wagner and Ashaya Wallace each finished with six points.

Addison Taft and Laila Burchard each had four points for Elmira and Rhiannon Perkins finished with two points.

Adrianna Fontana led Union-Endicott with 12 points, while Peyton Germaine and Imani Williams finished with 10 points each.

Allison Stank had seven points for the Tigers and Dominika Diaz and Gianna Gennarelli each had five points, while Stella Diamintakos had three points.

“We really beat ourselves tonight,” Elmira coach A’Don Allen said. “Too many unforced errors, too many missed layups, too many missed free throws. We did not play Elmira basketball today. We have a lot of work to do.”
