Southern Tier Sports ReportIn every sport, in each season, there have been newcomers putting up big performances this year.
It’s led to some tough competition for the newcomers of the fall list. What was going to be a Super Seven is instead an Elite Eight of the best female newcomers of the year.
We will list five of the Elite Eight for the Southern Tier Sports Report, in no particular order, and then there will be the second runner-up, the runner-up and the newcomer of the Year.
MADDY GILL, CORNING, INDOOR T&F
Gill decided to give track and field a try this year in order to prepare for lacrosse season, and she had an instant impact.
Gill was one of the best jumpers in Section 4, and also a member of Corning’s 4x200 relay team, which made it to states.
Gill wound up going to states as both an individual, in the triple jump, and as a member of the relay team, all in her first year doing track and field.
She was the indoor track and field newcomer of the year, and was not only one of the All-STSR top female athletes, but also one of the Sports Reports newcomers of the winter, a list that includes more than 25 schools.
MADISON SMITH, ELMIRA BOWLING
Smith just missed making states, taking 11th at the state qualifier with a total of 1,691 for nine games, a 187 average with a high series of 586 and high game of 212.
Just an eighth-grader, Smith was one of the top local girls bowlers all season long.
She was the bowling newcomer of the year, and was not only one of the All-STSR top female athletes, but also one of the Sports Reports newcomers of the winter, a list that includes more than 25 schools.
MACY KARPOWICH, HORSEHEADS, VOLLEYBALL:
She was a force as a middle hitter for the Blue Raiders and got better as the season went on. Had 31 blocks to lead the blue Raiders and had 140 kills. Really was dominant in the postseason for the Blue Raiders. Helped the Blue Raiders go unbeaten in the regular season, win the STAC title and the Section 4 title and make the regional final.
She was the All-STSR volleyball newcomer of the year.
KATIE MILEY, HORSEHEADS, GIRLS’ SOCCER:
Was a force in the midfield for the Blue Raiders as an eighth-grader this season. While she was one of the youngest players in the STAC, she played with a maturity you see in seniors. She is an athletic player that held her own against anyone in the league.
She was the girls’ soccer newcomer of the year, and was not only one of the All-STSR top female athletes, but also one of the Sports Reports newcomers of the winter, a list that includes more than 25 schools.
ANNA LOWE, HORSEHEADS, GIRLS' LACROSSE
Anna Lowe scored 21 goals and had six assists this year for the Class B sectional champion Horseheads Blue Raiders this season. She was the girls’ lacrosse newcomer of the year.
SECOND RUNNER-UP
SOPHIA RESUE
Corning’s Sophia ReSue was the newcomer of the year for the all-STSR outdoor track and field team. ReSue helped lead Corning to a state medal in the 1600 relay and she was also a state qualifier in the high jump, with a top jump on the year of 5-feet, 3-inches. She also this week because a freshman All-American.
In the indoor season It took ReSue little time to make an impact in a new sport as she was a state qualifier for the Hawks this year.
Resue made states in the high jump this season and also made it as a member of the 4x200 relay for the Hawks.
She was one of the top athletes of the winter for the All-STSR newcomers team in the winter season.
RUNNER-UP
TEAGAN WALSH, CORNING, SKIING
The Southern Tier Sports Report winter sports newcomer of the year, and the Sports Reports All-Region newcomer of the year in the winter, a list that includes more than 25 schools.
She’s not even in high school yet and Walsh is already a sectional champion and a state qualifier in two events.
Walsh won the Section 4 championship in Alpine Skiing this year, and made it to states in both the slalom and Giant Slalom in her first season as a one-person ski team at Corning.
In the Giant Slalom the Corning skier finished 37th out of 64 competitors with a time of 2:54 at states. She had a top time of 1:25.4 in her first time down the course.
Walsh was 42nd in the slalom out of 64 competitors. She had a total time of 2:00.98, including a 50.9 in her first time down the course.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR:
MEGAN WOLF, HORSEHEADS, GIRLS’ BASKETBALL, SOFTBALL
She was the All-STSR softball newcomer of the year and girls’ basketball newcomers of the year. She was the All-STSR Winter newcomer of the year.
Horseheads’ Megan Wolf played a key role in helping the Blue Raiders win the sectional title and she was the newcomer of the year for the all-STSR softball team. The freshman pitched both the sectional semifinal and final, and in the sectional final she also hit a game-tying home run. She had a 2.71 ERA with 47 strikeouts for the Blue Raiders this year, in a season that included a no hitter.
Wolf had a big freshman year for the Blue Raiders during basketball season as well.
Wolf scored 104 points this year and had the assignment of guarding the other teams best players. She defended girls going to Penn State and Fordham and many players who will be all conference. selections. Coach Andy Scott describes her as a fierce competitor with a big will to win and a great young lady to coach.
