TRAVEL SOFTBALL: LADY REBELS 14U CAPTURE RISING STARS TITLE (2022-06-21)

Valley Sports Report OSWEGO, N.Y. — The New York Lady Rebels 14U (Johnston) went 6-0 on Father’s Day weekend at the Rising Stars Tournament at Legends Fields here, winning the championship game in walk-off fashion over the Guilderland Riptide 14U, 6-5.

In pool play on Saturday, the Rebels posted wins over the Utica Lady Comets Black 14U, 7-6, the Lady Outlaws 14U 5-3, and the Lady Lightning White, 6-3.

On Sunday, the Lady Rebels started the day strong with a 16-4 win over the CNY Xplosion and a 12-0 win over the Lady Outlaws 14U to reach the championship game where they topped the Guilderland Riptide 14U 6-5 with a walk-off single.

In the championship game, the Lady Rebels fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning, but quickly cut that deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the first when RaeAnne Feeko singled to left field allowing Zeraya Wilson to score on an error by the Riptide’s left fielder. Feeko would later score on a steal of home.

The Riptide plated another run in the top of the second to pull ahead 4-2, but the Rebels came right back when Bella Moffe singled in the bottom of second, and would later score on a single by Matti Johnston, bringing the Rebels within one run.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Rebels tied things up when Kenna Thomas led off with a single, and scored one batter later when Kailey McCormick singled to left field and a miscue by the Riptide left fielder allowed Thomas to score, to make it 4-4.

The Riptide plated their final run in the top of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead, but in true Rebels fashion, they weren’t done. In the bottom of the fifth, McCormick reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Lily Newell to tie the score at 5-5. Newell advanced to second on the throw home and the next batter, Maddie Payne, singled to right, driving in Newell with the game-winning run with a walk-off single.

Feeko, McCormick, and Newell all collected multiple hits to lead the way for the Rebels, who pounded out 11 hits in the championship game.Wilson, Johnston, Thomas, Payne, and Moffe each collected one hit.

Johnston was in the circle for the Lady Rebels and got the win. She scattered five hits, while striking out six and walking two.

The Lady Rebels are based out of Horseheads with players from both New York and Pennsylvania.
