Southern Tier Sports Report
The future looks bright for area teams as a number of girls had big first seasons on the varsity level.

It made things tough when it came to picking just seven athletes for this year’s All-Southern Tier Sports Report Super Seven Girls’ Newcomers of the Spring.

We will list four athletes in no particular order, and then we will count down the top three as a second runner-up, a runner-up and a newcomer of the spring.

Alexus Borek, Horseheads, T&F
The eighth-grader was first in three different STAC West contests in the 400 hurdles for the Blue Raiders this season. She was an all-STSR track and field all star.

Kendall Curreri, Corning, softball
A key member of the Corning softball team that reached the Sectional final and won their first STAC title. She was an all-rookie team pick on the All-STSR softball team.

Evelyn Wheeler, ND girls’ golf
Evelyn Wheeler was just a seventh grader playing on the boys’ varsity team at Notre Dame, but she made an impact all season, and was among the team’s top five golfers at the IAC Championships and she was the newcomer of the year for girls golf on the All-STSR team.

Leila Ianovici, Corning, T&F
Ianovici hit the freshman hurdle standard to make freshman nationals and competed there this week. She was second only to teammate Lauren Gerrow in the 400m hurdles all season. Top Freshman in the section at the event. Also pointed for us at STAC in the long jump and 400H. Was a second-team all-STSR track and field all star.

SECOND RUNNER-UP
Anna Lowe, Horseheads, girls’ lacrosse

Anna Lowe scored 21 goals and had six assists this year for the Class B sectional champion Horseheads Blue Raiders this season. She was the girls’ lacrosse newcomer of the year.

FIRST RUNNER-UP
Sophia ReSue, Corning, T&F

Corning’s Sophia ReSue was the newcomer of the year for the all-STSR track and field team. ReSue helped lead Corning to a state medal in the 1600 relay and she was also a state qualifier in the high jump, with a top jump on the year of 5-feet, 3-inches. She also this week because a freshman All-American.

NEWCOMER OF THE SPRING
Megan Wolf, Horseheads, softball

Horseheads’ Megan Wolf played a key role in helping the Blue Raiders win the sectional title and she was the newcomer of the year for the all-STSR softball team. The freshman pitched both the sectional semifinal and final, and in the sectional final she also hit a game-tying home run. She had a 2.71 ERA with 47 strikeouts for the Blue Raiders this year, in a season that included a no hitter.
