STAC GIRLS' SOCCER: SARNO REACHES COACHING MILESTONE AS ELMIRA TOPS ITHACA (2021-09-13)

Southern Tier Sports Report
ITHACA — For Elmira coach Zach Sarno it was a milestone night as he picked up his 150th coaching win as the Express beat Ithaca 2-0.

While the milestone is special, Sarno knows he could never do this without all the girls he’s coached over the past 15 years.

“As far as winning 150 that’s just reaching a milestone for me personally, but also it’s not about me, it’s about all the players and student athletes I’ve had the privilege of having them play for me that helped me get all those wins,” Sarno said. “I’ve just had the privilege of helping the girls and the program and I love doing that, and I love being the person who has been lucky enough to be coaching in the district for 15 years and to get all the wins, but I wouldn’t be there without all the girls that have played with me before. Great milestone.”

For the Express the win was a nice bounce back after a 2-1 loss to Notre Dame on Friday.

Emily Hanrahan and Mia Capilli each had a goal and an assist in the victory.

For Sarno it was nice to see the effort in the game.

“A really great win tonight over a really, really good STAC west team in Ithaca who won their first game over Vestal I think 6-0,” Sarno said. “A really good win tonight for the team overall. I couldn’t be more proud. We rebounded so well from a really kind of rough game on Friday night at Notre Dame.

“Definitely played well in that game and didn’t get the result and I thought tonight the effort was tremendous.”
