THE SPORTS REPORTS: CORNING'S McKANE NAMED ALL-REGION FEMALE 'ATHLETE OF THE FALL;' FIVE OTHER SOUTHERN TIER ATHLETES MAKE LIST (2021-12-19)

There were some outstanding performances this fall, but Corning sophomore Angie McKane was head-and-shoulders above the rest, and is The Sports Reports’ 2021 All-Region “Female Athlete of the Fall.”

McKane became the first state champion swimmer for the Hawks when she won the 100-yard butterfly NYSPHSAA title. She also added a fifth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle.

McKane broke school records in both events and also broke the Section 4 record in the fly. Her list of records she holds is already a mile long and she’s just a sophomore.

McKane qualified for States in four events, helping Corning to States in both the 200 and 400 free relays. The 200 free relay finished 11th at states.

McKane was the Southern Tier Female “Swimmer of the Year.” She already has one state title in her career and has two more years to try and add to that.

The Baker’s Dozen is littered with underclassmen, including an 8th-grader and a freshman, and includes just three seniors.

Shannon Maloney, junior, ND girls soccer: The Crusaders junior was a first-team all-state selection, and she allowed just three goals in the postseason, and only one prior to the state semifinals.

It was Maloney’s first year as Notre Dame’s goalie, but you would never be able to tell. She put in a lot of work in the offseason and  became a dominant force in net, using her athleticism to make saves few can get to.

Maloney was named the All-Region “Player of the Year.”

Taylor Malone, junior, Horseheads, volleyball: Malone was a force for the Blue Raiders this year, helping them go unbeaten through the regular season, and advance to a regional final, while winning the STAC and Section 4 titles along the way.

Malone led the team with 262 kills this year, while also leading the team with 240 digs, and leading the team with 55 aces. She was an all-around player who was the leader on offense, and defense for the Blue Raider.

The Horseheads junior was the All-Region Volleyball “Player of the Year,” and is already committed to play Division II volleyball in college.

Aislyn Williams, junior, Canton volleyball: An outstanding all-around player, Williams finished with 188 kills and 161 digs, and led the Warriors to their fifth straight district title, and  the state final four.

She was named the Northern Tier Sports Report  and NTL Volleyball “Player of the Year,” and  also made the all-state team.

Sarah Lawson, sophomore, Corning, cross country: The Hawks sophomore had a huge year, earning a state medal in Class A after winning the STAC and Section 4 titles. She finished 16th at the  prestigious Eastbay Regional meet.

The Corning runner helped guide her team to a STAC title and a Section 4 Championship. She was the All-Region Cross Country Female “Runner of the Year.”

Shelby Swartz, senior, Candor volleyball: A first-team all-state selection, the senior middle hitter registered 381 kills, 262 digs, 213 service points, including 85 aces, 42 blocks and 19 assists in 108 sets while leading the Indians to a 21-1 record.

They won their fourth straight IAC division and Small School championship and repeated as the Section IV Class D champion, advancing to the state semifinals.

Swartz was named to the New York Volleyball Coaches Association Class D first team. She was also the All-Region “Offensive Player of the Year.”



Emmi Ward, senior, Troy/Canton soccer: Ward anchored one of the best soccer defenses in the area at sweeper, and was named the NTL Girls Soccer “Player of the Year” for the second year in a row. She was also the All-Region Defensive Player of the Year.”

Ward helped the Trojans win their first outright league title since 2010.

Erin McDonald, sophomore, Owego soccer:A sophomore, she split time as a forward and midfielder. McDonald scored 27 goals and dished out nine assists to lead the Indians to a 9-3-2 record and a Section IV Class B co-championship.

Emily Hanrahan, junior, Elmira girls soccer: Hanrahan, a fourth-team all-state selection, had 23 goals this year, along with four assists.

She helped guide Elmira to the sectional title, and was the All-Region “Offensive Player of the Year.”

Hannah Walker, senior, Athens soccer: A fiery and physical competitor, the ultra-athletic Walker made everyone around her better. She scored 18 goals and dished out 16 assists on the season.

She has verbally committed to play Division I soccer at St. Bonaventure.

Walker was the Valley Sports Report Girls Soccer “Player of the Year.”

Brooke Terwilliger, sophomore, Corning diving: Terwilliger was runner-up at sectionals, but she saved her best meet for States, finishing 10th in the state to earn a state medal. She was the area’s most consistent diver throughout the season.

Terwilliger was the All-Southern Tier “Diver of the Year.”
