CANDOR — Edison battled heat, hills and humidity in its first cross country meet of the season at Catatonk Golf Club here Tuesday.

The Spartan girls would finish third in the five-team IAC run which included Newark Valley, Spencer-VanEtten / Candor, Tioga and Dryden. The Cardinals scored 31 points to edge SVEC's 34. The Spartans had 71, Tioga totaled 102 and Dryden had an incomplete team.

"I felt we did really well," coach Jed Twichell said. "It was a kind of early-in-the-season race for us, tough course, and they did very well with the heat and the hills."

Maura Heraghty paced the Edison squad with a fifth-place finish, posting a time of 28:55. She trailed the 1-2-3 effort of NV's Harley Switzer, Addyson Osburn and Emma Smith. Switzer logged the top time, 26:06.

Edison's Sophia Mirando and Josie Burleigh placed 12th and 13th, respectively, with times of 31:28 and 32:39.

The Spartans' Isabella Moffe was 19th in 35:26, Riley Thresher took 24th in 38:16, Mariana Jones finished 25th in 42:27 and Courtney Fernan came in 27th, clocking 42:41.

The boys team ended up fourth with 100 points. The host Eagles won that race, scoring 39 points to Newark Valley's 57. Tioga was third with 77 and Dryden was incomplete.

Evan Lucero led Edison, claiming 14th with a time of 24:49. Ethan Smith was 18th in 25:40, Kaleb Podoliak edged teammate Caden Southard for 23rd as they clocked 27:05 and 27:07, respectively. Darius Kelley placed 30th in 30:50 and Robert French took 31st with a time of 31:22.

"I was really pleased with the way they ran as well, so I'm very happy with our first effort," Twichell said. "I know with the time off and everything, a lot of these guys, varsity girls as well, are doing this for the first time, so this is their very first varsity race ever. This is a tough course and I thought they did great."

Edison will compete in the Elmira Notre Dame Invitational Saturday.
