SECTION 4 GIRLS' SOCCER: ND RALLIES TWICE, ADVANCES TO SECTIONAL FINAL (24 PHOTOS) (2025-10-29)
By Brian FeesSouthern Tier Sports ReportSOUTHPORT — Down a goal two different times, the Notre Dame girls’ soccer team rallied to advance to the Section IV, Class C championship game.
The game ended in a 2-2 tie against Bainbridge-Guilford with Notre Dame advancing on penalty kicks.
Breanna Casey put Bainbridge-Guilford ahead 1-0 in the first half.
MK Young scored with 23 minutes left to tie the game, but Casey scored again just three minutes later for BG.
After the second BG goal, Notre Dame goalie Payton Sutryk had plenty of confidence in her team.
“Once I let the second goal in I was like, I’ve got to trust in my team and when Ellie got it I was so happy,” Sutryk said.
Green had moved up on defense, leading to the goal.
“I really just took it from the back and went with it,” Green said. “I trusted my coach, he said you should go up and I went up and I took the chance.”
Young saw Green coming as she crossed the ball.
“Right away I knew Ellie was coming up,” Young said. “I saw her coming around the corner, I was like Ellie’s got that.”
The two have had a strong connection throughout their careers.
“We have been on target together since seventh and eighth grade,” Green said.
While they played from behind a lot of the game, the Notre Dame players believed in themselves.
“I feel like we came in with confidence,” Young said. “Just because we were down it felt like 0-0 to us.”
“We felt like that was the most determination and focus we’ve had for an entire game,” Green added.
No one scored in the overtimes, and the game went to a shootout.
“We had confidence in our PK’s,” Young said. “We knew toward the end we had it, we’ve been practicing for weeks now.”
In the shootout Payton Sutryk started things strong for the Crusaders, making a save on the firsts BG shot.
Green then scored for the Crusaders to put them up 1-0.
BG got a goal, and Freshman Rose Daly followed with a goal for the Crusaders.
The next BG shot went high and Jhamariah Maxwell scored to put Notre Dame up 3-1.
It looked like the Crusaders had the game won, but BG made their next two shots and BG made a save in goal and then the last Notre Dame shot hit the post.
That sent the game to a second round of penalty kicks.
“I was on my toes the entire game,” Green said.
BG went high on their first shot and the Notre Dame shot again hit a post.
BG had a shot go wide and Sadie Potter then scored for Notre Dame to make it 1-0 in the round.
Sutryk then made a save for Notre Dame.
BG had a save, and then the next BG shot went high. Notre Dame took a shot that was saved, but Sutryk made a save on the next BG shot to seal the win.
“I don’t know (what I saw), I kind of blacked out and I just got it and celebrated,” Sutryk said.
When Sutryk made the final save it took her a second to realize that ended the game.
“I thought we were going to have to do another kid and then I was like, ‘oh wait.’”
Now it’s onto the final at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Sidney against fourth-seeded Groton, who topped Trumansburg 1-0 in overtime in the other semifinal.
“We hope we can be really focused and really together for this game,” Green said.
