SOUTHPORT — Down 1-0 early, the Notre Dame boys’ soccer team rallied past South Kortright/Andes in the Section IV, Class D playoffs.

JB Trimbell scored eight minutes in to give South Korthright the lead, but Davi Valente tied things to make it 1-1 at the half.

Notre Dame had plenty of offensive chances, but struggled to punch in another goal.

“The offense was playing great, they had a lot of opportunieis, a lot of shots, they just weren’t capitalizing, but we pulled out the W,” Finn Schweizer said.

The close game just made things more fun for the defense.

“It’s exciting, honestly,” Schweizer said. “It makes the game more fun for me, because more is on the line.”

Midway through the second half Justin Mullen took the ball just inside the 18 and fired a strike to put the Crusaders ahead.

“Justin is a great player, he’s young, but he’s a big part of our team,” Schweizer said.

The Crusaders know that the competition in Class D is tough.

“It’s great,” Schweizer said. “I think the Class D schools are really physical. I play lacrosse, so it’s a lot like lacrosse for me to be honest.”

It is tough playing teams you don’t see all season long.

“It makes it exciting, to be sure,” Schweizer said. “We didn’t even have film on this team.”

It took some time for the Crusaders to get things going against a team they didn’t know much about, but as the game went on they played how they are capable.

“Obviously it took a little more than 10 minutes since they scored first thing,” Schweizer said. “But, then we settled in and played the way we play.”

Getting down early was tough, but the Crusaders had confidence.

“It’s nerve wracking,” Schweizer said. “But, our coach teaches us the right way in practice and we were ready.”

Notre Dame hosts Edmonton in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Edmonton, is the third seed, and beat No. 6 Worcester 1-0 in overtime. Notre Dame is the second seed.
