SECTION 4 WRESTLING: ELMIRA EXCITED AS SEASON NEARS (24 PHOTOS) (2021-11-30)

ELMIRA — For the Elmira wrestling team it’s been good to get back to work this season as they get ready to open up the varsity season this week.

“It’s awesome,” Elmira coach David Guyette said. “It’s great to be back and get some sense of normalcy here. We have more kids in the room this year than we did last year because of the shortened Covid season. Our numbers aren’t as high as they normally are, but we are kind of building back with a good group of young kids.”

The Elmira wrestlers are ready to get going. A few got a chance to wrestle at a JV Tournament at Union-Endicott last weekend, while the varsity kids start the season this week.

“They are chomping at the bit,” Guyette said. “They are here every day. They are working hard, I think they are pretty excited. We had about five JV guys get good experience last weekend and we are looking forward to opening up Thursday against Vestal and then Saturday at the Newark Valley Tournament.”

Getting a more normal offseason to prepare for this year was good for the team.

“That was actually really nice,” Guyette said. “Most of these guys are multiple sport athletes, so finding time to get in, we did some work over the summer. Then, we got a couple good weeks of preseason in after the seasons (fall sports) were over with. It was nice.”
