AREA ATHLETES FINDING SUCCESS (2021-08-17)

Corning senior-to-be Atalyia Rijo had an eventful summer as she was named to play in the Futures All-American Game.

Rijo, a shortstop, played for the juniors team, against the sophomore team.

The game featured just 40 players, the top juniors and sophomores in the nation. Going into her junior year the Corning star was ranked the third-best player in the nation at shortstop.

She's a Virginia commit who travels to North Carolina to play travel ball in the summer. Corning won the Section 4 title last year, but Covid cost them a chance to try and defend their state title, as there was no state tournament a year ago.

At Virginia the Corning star will team up with former Elmira catcher Sarah Coon.

TERWILLIGER TRANSFERS

Former Corning baseball star Ben Terwilliger will be playing for one of the top Division I teams in the country, as he transferred to East Carolina.

Terwilliger played at Barry University in Florida, and he is headed to East Carolina as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility left.

The 6-foot, 4-inch right-hander spent the summer playing for the Williamsport Crosscutters in the MLB Draft League.

Terwilliger threw 6 1/3 innings over six appearances this summer. He worked to a 2.84 ERA on the summer and struck out 10 against just two walks.

He had one save this summer. East Carolina reached the NCAA Super Regional this past season.

FISHER JOINS FORMER TEAMMATE AT MARIST

Former Elmira star Kiara Fisher transferred from Syracuse University to Marist, where she will join her former Elmira teammate, Zaria Demember-Shazer.

Fisher, a 5-foot-7 guard from Elmira, NY, played one season with the Orange in 2020-21 before joining the Red Foxes.

Fisher was one of 12 players to leave the Syracuse women's basketball program, a program that saw the resignation of their basketball coach.

"We are thrilled with the addition of Kiara Fisher to our team," said Head Coach Brian Giorgis. "Kiara is a dynamic combo guard who will push tempo, and has great court vision. She is crafty off the bounce, and has tremendous speed and quickness. Adding a guard with ACC experience to our already deep backcourt takes our team to another level."

In her freshman campaign, Fisher played in 10 games for Syracuse, making one start. She averaged three points per game, and sank seven of her 11 three-pointers.

Her season-high was 11 points and three triples, which she both achieved at UNC on December 17th, 2020. A month later, she dropped scored points against Miami without missing a shot.

Fisher reunites with rising junior Trinasia Kennedy and rising sophomore Demember-Shazer. The three played AAU basketball together for BNY Select.

Fisher and DeMember-Shazer were teammates at Elmira High School as well, where they played together since eighth grade and won four consecutive Section 4, Class AA titles.

"We have watched Kiara play for a long time with Trinasia and Zaria, and it will be great to see that group together on the court again," mentioned Giorgis.

Fisher was a team captain for the Express since her sophomore year. She was named First Team All-State, Elite 10 Player of the Year twice, and Section 4 Class AA Player of the Year three times throughout her career. In her senior year, she recovered from ACL surgery in four months and played the entire season, averaging 17 points, 8.2 assists, 5.6 steals, and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Fisher's mother, Kara, played basketball at SUNY Potsdam. Her brother, Kyreese, is a rising junior basketball player at Hilbert College in Hamburg, NY.

HITTING THE BEACH

Corning grad Sadie Sharkey is having success in volleyball at the college level. Only, it's not traditional volleyball.

Sharkey played in 11 duals, and went 6-5 for the UNC Wilmington beach volleyball team. During her freshman campaign she was part of a five-match winning streak, including a victory over 16th ranked South Carolina.

In high school Sharkey was a three-time first-team all-star for Corning.

RUNNING AT NATIONALS

Elmira graduate Abbey Wheeler had a 12th place finish at the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 meters in June.

Wheeler, who runs for Providence, finished in 33:04.56. The winning time was Carmela Cardama Baez of Oregon in 32:16.13.

Corning grad Jess Lawson was the Big Meet 3,000 winner for track and field and she was on the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll. In cross country she finished ninth at the Pac-12 Championships and was the number four runner on the Stanford team that won the conference title. She was third on the team at the NCAA Championships, as the team took third overall. She was 56th overall at the NCAA meet.

Both runners had seasons lost due to Covid and have eligibility to return this year.

OLMSTEADS' SHINE

Corning graduate Aidan Olmstead had a huge season for the Loyola (Maryland) lacrosse team. Olmstead had 31 goals and 29 assists, to lead the team with 60 points on the season.

The team made it to the NCAA quarterfinals, falling in overtime, 10-9, to Duke. Olmstead will return to the team as a graduate student this year.

He's had a tremendous career in college. As a freshman he tied for sixth among Division 1 freshmen in assists and was seventh in assists per game. He has 86 goals and 82 assists in 54 games during his career.

idan has two younger sisters playing on the women's team. Logan played in six games for the women, starting once, while Riley played in 13 games, with 12 starts on the season.

Both Riley and Logan are sophomores on the women's team. Riley is a defensive player, while Logan is a midfielder.

The women were 12-3 on the season, falling in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Syracuse. Two of the team's three losses were to Syracuse.
