HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' SWIMMING & DIVING: LOCALS SET RECORDS, MAKE STATES AT INVITATIONAL AT THE GLEN (2022-09-24)

WATKINS GLEN — It was a record-setting day for area swimmers and divers at the Girls’ Swimming & Diving Invitational at the Glen.

Corning’s Angie McKane had an all-American consideration time and pool record in the 100 fly, finishing just .03 off her state championship time from last year, despite it being just midseason.

The Hawks’ 200 free relay qualified for states during the meet in one of the best races in the state this year. Shenendehowa won the relay in 1:40.24 and Corning was second in 1:40.41. The two times are currently the two fastest times in the state this year.

Corning’s Brooke Terwilliger qualified for states again this year after finishing third in the diving competition at 480.80. The state cut is 440. Sophie Meuwissen of Fairport won at 546.45, more than 100 points over the state cut.

In the 200 medley relay Corning’s team of Maria Kuksenkova, McKane, Audra Hilker and Carolyn Heckle finished second in 1:54.95. Horseheads team of Anna and Sibby Lowe, Grace Shelhamer and Gabby Janeski took third in 1:54.97.

McKane won the 200 IM in 2:07.87 and Notre Dame’s Allie O’Brien was seventh in 2:22.72.

In the diving Emma Bachert of Horseheads was fourth in 399.40 and Corning’s Nicole Gaskievicz was seventh at 372.45.

Horseheads’ Gracie Ringer was sixth in the 100 free in 58.17 followed by Heckle in 58.47.

Corning’s time in the 200 free was more than a second under the state qualifying time.

Horseheads took fourth in the 200 free relay in 1:44.70 with a team of Sibby Lowe, Gracie Ringer, Janeski and Shelhamer.

Hilker was eighth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.20 and Kara Peters of Corning was eighth in the 200 free in 2:06.52.

Sibby Lowe won the 50 free for Horseheads in 25.18 and her sister Anna Lowe was third in 25.43. Corning’s Heckle was sixth in 25.98.

McKane’s time in the 100 fly was 45.66. She broke her own pool record in the race by over a second (55.76 a year ago). To understand how fast McKane was, Alice Spaulding of Skaneateles was runner-up in 59.18 seconds, more than four and a half seconds behind, and Spaulding’s time was a second below the state cut time.

Horseheads’ Sibby Lowe was third in the 100 fly in 1:00.93 and Mia Carro of Horseheads was seventh in 1:04.74.

Peters was eighth in the 500 free in 5:37.70.

Notre Dame’s O’Brien was seventh in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.26 followed by Anna Lowe in 1:03.60.

Horseheads was sixth in the 400 free relay with a team of Anna Lowe, Ringer, Carro and Anh The Tran in 3:54.50 while Corning finished a spot back in 4:07.54 with a team of Peters, Gross, Hilker and Caitlyn Bain.
