HIGH SCHOOL BOYS' SOCCER: CORNING WINS IN MATCHUP OF STATE RANKED TEAMS (2022-09-24)

CORNING — The Corning boys faced a tough test in a battle of unbeaten teams and they came out on top, 5-1 over SS Seward Institute.

Corning entered ranked ninth in the state in Class AA and SS Seward was ranked 16th in Class C.

“Today the Corning defenses (Rowan Rosno, Anthony Mendoza, Liam Bayne, Luke Mertus, Seaver Nellis, Alex Large) was up to the test of stopping a potent offense from SS Seward Institute.

“SS Seward Institute came in ranked No. 16 in NYS Class C with a record of 7-1 and having outscored their opponents 39-9. The Corning offense continued to work on building up on the attacking third. We hope to continue to work to be better each day. Next up is preparation for Union-Endicott on Wednesday.”

Preston Ogunwumi had a pair of goals for Corning in the game and Carter Rosno, Bayne and Nate Freelove all had goals in the contest.

Nate Freelove had three assists and Carter Rosno and Jake Kempton all had assists.

Alex Pawlicek had the goal for Seward off an assist from Jason Mitchell.

Corning had 22 shots and 10 corner kicks and Seward had four shots and two corner kicks.

Caleb Anderson had two saves and Phil Borden had a save for Corning. Corbett Schultz had 15 saves for Seward.
