It’s finally time for some Friday Night Lights in Elmira as the Express football team plays their first game in their new stadium, hosting Union-Endicott on Homecoming.

After the girls’ soccer team got the first game under the lights Thursday at the new Thomas J. Hurley Athletic Complex, it’s the football team’s time tonight.

“The kids are excited for a place to finally call home,” Elmira coach Jimmy McCauley said. “It’s been a long time coming.”

The night opens with an Express Booster Club Tailgate featuring food trucks, music, tailgate games and a bouncy house for younger kids and then gates open at 6 p.m.

The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at halftime there will be a ribbon-cutting and field naming ceremony and the presentation of the homecoming court, along with a performance by the Elmira High School marching band.

It’s free admission to the game.

While it’s expected to be a special day, it’s also a matchup against a team that won a Section 4, Class A title a year ago.

“Union-Endicott is tough,” McCauley said. “They have skill players everywhere, and they like to use them all over the field, through the run game and passing game.”

The Express know against a good team that have to take advantage of every opportunity they get.

“We have to make plays when they present themselves,” McCauley said. “You don’t know how many opportunities you will get through a game.”
