STAC CROSS COUNTRY: CORING BOYS DOMINANT AT PRE-STATES, GIRLS TAKE 2ND (2021-09-18)

CHENANGO VALLEY — The Corning cross country teams had already shown their dominance early this season.

On Saturday they got their first big test at the McDaniel-Baxter Cross Country Invitational, a pre-state meet.

For the boys there were 66 teams overall and Corning won the title with 84 points, easily topping Fayetteville-Manlius who had 147.

Horseheads finished 14th at 496 and Elmira was 25th at 794.

Corning was led by Jack Gregorski, who was 2nd overall in 16.01.9, while J. Matthew Gensel was 13th overall in 16:47.1, while Marcus Homa was 19th in 17:00.6 and Ashton Bange was 24th in 17:08.6 and Tevin McClaren was 26th in 17:14.

The two extra runners for Corning also each finished in the top 50 with Joshua Beres 35th in 17:28.6 and Gabe Cornfield was 47th in 17:42.9. Beres would have finished top five on any other team in the tournament.

Axl Andrus of Horseheads was 23rd in 17:08.0 and Ace Andrus was 37th (17:32.8), while Ben Long was 92nd (18:38.6) and Keagen Winkky was 143rd (19:13.6). Cael Owen was 201st for Horseheads in 19:47.7.

Collin Carpenter (240th in 20:17.8) and Kiran Gulati (241st in 20:19.2) were the extra two runners for the Blue Raiders.

Elmira was led by Isaac May in 7th place (18:20.0) and Caleb Belanger in 93rd (18:39.6), while Ben Allen was 120th (18:58.5) and Nasir King was 214th (19:53.7) an Andrew Degnan Jr. was 292nd (20:54.2).

Tyler Keep was 318th (21:26.2) and Dylan Names was 321st (21:30.7) for the other two Elmira runners.

The Corning girls were 2nd overall at 147, behind race winners Fayetteville-Manlius who had 51 points. Fayetteville had the top two finishers and three of the top 12 overall to get the win.

Sarah Lawson led Corning in 5th place, winning her race on the day as the event was split into 12 races. Lawson finished fifth in 18:46.4 and Faithe Ketchum was 12th in 19:26.4 while Sadie Beres was 37th in 20:54.9 and Ella Grinnell was 43rd in 21:09.5 and Bri Urban was 58th in 21:25.7.

Julia Hluck was 63rd in 21:44.2 and Cristina Gaskievicz was 72nd in 21:54.2 as the extra two Corning runners.

Elmira finished 25th as a team with Vicky Mordvinova finishing 28th in 20:33.9 and Payton Ross was 80th in 22:08.7, while Emma Barends was 110th in 22:59.4 and Christina Peet was 151st in 23:53.9 and Katie May was 288th in 30:48.7, while Hailey Greene was the sixth runner in 298th at 32:40.7.

Horseheads finished 32nd as a team. Corinne Defilippo was 99th in 22:41.1 and Anna Lowe finished 168th in 24.21.0, while Samantha Oakes finished 194th in 25:01.9 and Jennifer Kruckowwas 199th in 25:07.9 and Ayla Kerwan was 200th in 25:10.2.
