ON TAP TODAY: TWO MORE FOOTBALL GAMES, ONE A BIG RIVALRY (2021-09-18)

Southern Tier Sports Report
A pair of football games, one of them a rivalry showdown, highlights the action on Saturday.

Edison and Notre Dame square off on the gridiron, while Corning added a neutral site game with Monroe Woodbury.

Here’s a look at all the day’s events.

FOOTBALL
NOTRE DAME AT EDISON, 1:30 P.M.
The Spartans play host to the Crusaders in an eight-man football game. Both teams opened last week with losses, with Edison falling at Newfield and Notre Dame dropping a game at home against Trumansburg. Both will be looking for their first win in this matchup, with Edison hosting their first game of the year.

CORNING VS. MONROE WOODBURY, 5 P.M.
AT JOHNSON CITY
The Hawks made a late addition to their schedule, picking up this game on Thursday. Corning was originally set to play Aquinas this week, but Section 4 isn’t allowing games against teams outside Section 5. Monroe Woodbury lost their opponent due to Covid protocol at that school. The Hawks are 1-0 on the season and state ranked, while Woodbury lost their opener to a state-ranked team, and are honorable mention in the Class AA state rankings.

CROSS COUNTRY
CORNING, ELMIRA, HORSEHEADS AT PRE-STATE MEET
(CHENANGO VALLEY), 9 A.M.
The Hawks are the top ranked boys team in the state and they get some elite competition against most of the rest of the state’s best teams. Horseheads will look to run their first meet since the Corning relays and Elmira kicks off their season. There are 12 races all day long and the area teams are spread throughout the larger school races.

BOYS’ SOCCER
ELMIRA AT CORNING, 6 P.M.
The Hawks welcome the Express for a Saturday night game. Both teams are coming off 3-1 wins over Horseheads, with Corning winning at home on Tuesday, while Elmira won on the road Thursday against the Blue Raiders.

HORSEHEADS AT ITHACA, 11 A.M.
The Blue Raiders are coming off back-to-back heartbreaking osses to Corning and Elmira. In both games the game was tied in the final minutes. They take to the road to take on an Ithaca team that edged Elmira 2-1 last week.

SWIMMING
CORNING AND NOTRE DAME AT WAVERLY INVITE, 9 A.M.
The Hawks and Crusaders each take to the road to take on a variety of teams at the Waverly Invitational.
Angie McKane has had a record-breaking start to the season for the Wolverines, and she hasn’t lost an individual event yet this year, while Allie O’Brien of Notre Dame has five wins in the Crusaders first two meets.

VOLLEYBALL
ELMIRA, CORNING AT TIOGA TOURNAMENT, 9 A.M.
The Express and Hawks each take part in the Tioga Tournament. The Tigers are one of the top small schools In the state and they always host a strong tournament field.

GIRLS’ SOCCER
ELMIRA AT BALDWINSVILLE
VS. LIVERPOOL, 1:15 P.M.
The Express take an overnight trip to Baldwinsville for a two-day tournament. Athens opens up with a game against Liverpool.
