HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: CORNING, HORSEHEADS ATHLETES RECOGNIZED ON ALL-STATE FOOTBALL LIST (2022-01-19)

Southern Tier Sports Report
The Corning Hawks captured the Section 4, Class AA title and now a number of their athletes are being recognized at the state level.

Corning had three players earn all-state honors, while two more were on the honorable mention list.

Horseheads also had two players earn honorable mention all-state honors on the Class A list.

Corning finished the year 8-2, falling in a close 20-16 game to Cierco-North Syracuse in the state quarters.

Running back Dillon Kennedy and offensive lineman Grayson Saltzer each earned fourth-team honors for the Hawks, while linebacker Lucas Zawko earned sixth-team honors.

Running back Mason Smith and defensive back Will Kibler each earned honorable mention honors for the Hawks.

"Really nice honors for those kids," Corning coach Mike Johnston Jr. said. "Happy that they were recognized at the state level for their accomplishments.

"This senior class has so much to be proud of. I believe our overall record in the last three years was 22 wins and four losses, two sectional and two league titles. And, not even taking the Covid 19 Spring season into consideration."

For Horseheads, both running back Riley Loomis and Gannon Johnston earned honorable mention honors.

While Horseheads coach Kevin Hillman was happy to see his stars recognized, he thought they should have made one of the teams and not just the honorable mention list.

“To be honest, I think they got it wrong,” Horseheads coach Kevin Hillman said. “They should be on the all-state team. That may be a biased opinion by me, but I truly believe it.

“That being said, they had an outstanding season and it’s a great honor to be listed as one of the top players in the state. They most definitely earned it and deserved the recognition. I couldn’t be prouder of those young men.”
