INDOOR T&F: NOTRE DAME HAS STRONG DAY AT HOUGHTON COLLEGE (2022-01-17)

The Notre Dame Indoor Track team was on the track again on Saturday at Houghton College in the Rochester Winter Track League Meet 5. 

The team had several strong performances on this day.  The Simpson Quads (Amanda, Rachael, Derek and Tyler) celebrated their birthday week with great finishes.  Rachael was first in the 600 meter run, coming from behind to win in a time of 1:47.30.  She was also fourth in the 300 meter dash with a time for 45.77.  Amanda finished fifth in the 300 with a time of 46.70 and sixth in the 55 meter dash with a time of 8.16.  Derek gave a hard effort in the 3200 meter run, finishing third in a personal best of 10:44.86.  Tyler really pushed himself in the 600, crossing the line with a time of 1:32.07, good enough for third place. 

Makenna Keough had a pair of wins on the day for Notre Dame, capturing the 55 hurdles (9.79) and the 55 meters (7.78).

Piper Young (1:50.50), Maura Devlin (1:51.10) and Isabella (Bella) Mashewske (1:58.21) also had top 10 finishes in the 600m run, finishing third, fourth and seventh, respectively.  Bella also made her debut in the high jump, clearing 4’2”, good enough for second place.  Leila Vargas finished tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing 3’9”. 

The girls 4 x 400 team of Lylie Colunio, Ellie Green, Devlin and Vargas finished third with time of 5:00.02.  Maura (30’7”), Ellie (29’ 5.5”) and Claire Devlin (28’ 1.75”)  placed 3rd, 5th and 9th in the triple jump. 

“I’m really proud of the effort the athletes put forth today,” Notre Dame coach Brett Shelton said. “We had several personal and season bests on the track and in the field.  There was a lot of learning that went on and we can build off these performances as we look toward the league, sectional and state qualifiers meet.”

The track team is back in action on January 29th at Houghton for the RWTL championships.
